This piece carries the name and spirit of Bill Pickett, the cowboy who invented bulldogging, the technique that became modern steer wrestling. Pickett learned it by watching a herding dog bring down a bull with nothing but instinct and a bite. He built a career out of it across three countries, at a time when the arenas he competed in often refused to see him for who he was. He wasn't formally recognized as a pioneer of the sport until decades after his death.
That gap, between what a man does and when the world finally admits it, is the open land this piece stands on. The horse still fights the rider in this frame. Some things were never meant to be broken in fully, they're only ever worked with.
This is the newest work to come out of the studio, painted closer to portraiture than most of what FLove makes, a shift in form that matches the shift in subject. It stands on its own, not as part of a set, but as a single answer to a question worth sitting with: what happens to the story of a man, and the ground he stood on, when the world takes generations to catch up.
